Purpose and responsibility

WAB Engineering is committed to preventing work-related injury and ill health in maintenance, manufacturing, parts handling, technical training and consultation. This policy applies to our personnel and to contractors working under our control, and includes protection of trainees, visitors and others affected by our work. Management is responsible for arranging suitable resources, supervision and safety instructions. Everyone doing work must follow the agreed precautions and raise concerns.

Plan before work begins

We will identify hazards, assess risks and agree suitable controls before starting a task. Work must be assigned to people with the necessary competence and authorisation. At customer sites, we will coordinate responsibilities, access restrictions, permits and emergency arrangements. Changes in conditions or scope require the safety assessment to be reviewed.

Control engineering risks

We will prioritise eliminating hazards and controlling them at source, supported by suitable protective equipment. Precautions must address the risks of the particular task, including:

• Secure isolation of electrical and mechanical energy, prevention of unexpected restart, and safe control of stored energy before maintenance.
• Suitable lifting methods, stable loads, guarding and safe access around machinery.
• Noise, fumes, ventilation, hot surfaces, fuel, chemicals and fire hazards.
• Appropriate personal protective equipment, task instructions and checks before equipment returns to service.

Protect learners and respond to danger

Trainees must receive an induction and supervision suited to their experience and the task. They must not undertake work beyond their competence or authorisation. Anyone may stop work and move to safety where they reasonably believe there is danger, without retaliation. Unsafe work must not resume until suitable controls have been established. Emergency access, first aid and arrangements for raising the alarm must be considered before work begins.

Report and improve

Injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported promptly to the person supervising the work or management. We will review incidents, involve workers in identifying improvements and track corrective actions. Management will review this policy at least annually and after significant incidents or changes in our work. Applicable legal requirements and relevant customer safety rules must be addressed in the work arrangements.
